Marriage Proposals IB english

Marriage Proposals have been, technically, new in society since asking for the hand of a woman in marriage wasn’t really a custom in the past, it was more likely to either kidnap the bride or pay a quantity to the family. The traditional way of proposing is for the man to bend in a knee and show an engagement ring to his future wife; but, as everything does, it has had some modifications through the passing of time. It isn’t as conventional as it was before. Now even woman can ask for marriage (although in America isn’t as common as in Europe) and there’s way more creative, funny, romantic, elaborated or pretty simple ways to ask for someone to spend their whole life together. But you know what? We have someone to blame about this explosion of creative proposals and is all thanks to dear old Hollywood with his romantic movies. All that goofy, clumsy and so lame (who am I kidding? I love them!) typical romantic movies where the ending are so predictable (a simple cliché with the same story) where the two love birds get marry DO have some good advice and ideas for marriage proposals.
Today I feel like making this blog more of a visual and auditory learning; I will like you, my dearest followers to see some of my favorite wedding proposals in movies and the ones that I believe deserve some credit for been pretty imaginative and original. I will like you to share your thoughts and feelings, which one for you is the best? Which one you dislike? And be free to add more movies proposals that aren’t in the list. The scenes are from movies like the Wedding Singer, Rocky 2, Meet the Parents, The Proposal, Leap Year, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Hope you guys like it!

  1. Hello Any! (: I found this post very interesting! It is interesting to talk about this topic, which affects the entire world or happens in the whole world, and it is also so romantic (: haha. But I personally don’t like how marriage proposals used to be in the past, well, some girls might have thought it was romantic if their boyfriend kidnapped them, or a girl that liked money would accept the guy if he gave her family thousand dollars or something, but there were also times when they only got married because they had to, it was a compromise, and I don’t like that kind of proposals. Well, instead, I like today’s proposals because even though they might be corny and influenced by movies, a lot of them are creative and new, and coming from true love (: Haha, another interesting thing you say here, is that now some girls can propose to their boyfriends!! Oh my God! Haha I never thought that would happen, but I think it is ok; If I had the opportunity or if my boyfriend was too slow then I would propose to him. Actually I have already proposed to Van Halen but he hasn’t answered : P Would you propose to your boyfriend? I hope that guys don’t see that as a bad thing, I hope that it becomes a normal thing that will show how women becomes more and more independent and confident every time, doing things that were “boy’s thing” before. I saw the video of the proposals in different movies, and I liked most the one where it was raining, and I did not like the one with Julia Roberts.

  2. Hello annie =D! woow I really LOVE your blog, I haven't read it before but it is a really interesting topic. I love weddings and I need to accept that I can get crazy with romantic movies. I'm agree about what you said that over the time, people have create original, funny and cute ideas to ask for someone to be together.
Also, I think that it is really cute when a boy ask to a girl for being his girlfriend, I mean, in my opinion, I think that sometimes teenagers are more cute than adults because they are experimenting the love for the first time.
Another interesting thing that you mention is that sometimes, movies can make us believe that all the proposals need to be perfect and lovely. I watched the videos that you posted and I really like the video of Julia Roberts because the boy explains all the things that he loves about her, and I think that that’s what a man must to said, it is like give an explanation and a reason of why he wants to get married.
Finally, I think that a woman can propose to a man because it doesn’t matter if they both love each other. (:
